I do agree with this statement somewhat because sometimes you may want to do something you like but are hesitant to do it because you think people are going to think it isn't manly enough. Like in the story the guy wanted to be a writer but people didnt view it as manly they viewed more as something a woman would do.
I'm a bit torn with the statement because in my opinion what defines a man are his freedoms. The freedoms by far outweigh the punishing burdens. While being a woman does not necessarily have such privileges a man has. At the same time one can't help but feel for Theroux as he states, "I find it impossible to admit to myself that I wanted to be a writer. It was my guilty secret, because being a writer was incompatible with being a man." Here it is clear the burden society bestows on men and the critique's he must face since birth.
I agree with this statement because the way our society is men has to dress,or act a certain way to be consider a man, and certain things a woman might do in a day to day basic might not look in a manly matter.In the story a writer would be considered a female carreer.
I do agree with Theroux's statement because society has certain expectations of men. What men do, how men dress, and how men act have to be seen a certain way to society. Men would also have to think twice about doing something if he is doing it differently than other men.
i do not agree with this statement because there are things that men are known to do and things that women are known to do. Im not saying a man can't do something that a women is known to do, same for the women, vice versa. Being a man does not have to be a unmerciful and punishing burden. society is what makes the genders. So, a man should choose the way he behaves, dresses, his career and do whatever he wants to do and not let society choose for him. the way society created that gender is what makes it seem unmerciful and a punishing burden.
I don't agree with Theroux's statement. Men often want to see themselves as heroes, playing leading roles in everything they do and do not see such roles as unmerciful and a burden. Also, men, like all human beings have choices. If a role is seen as a burden and unmerciful, they have a choice not to do it.
I don't agree with Theroux's statement. Men always had more advantages than the women and there are many things which wouldn't be acceptable if a woman does them. So saying that just men have to deal with these kind of issues won't be fair because women also face these things in their daily life.

For personal experiences I could say that a real man will stand and fight for what he thinks is right. A real man will not care about what everybody else thinks, he will follows his own instincts and heart to protect his beloved ones, but to Paul T. we all are a mere beast. Yes I agree with author Paul Theroux statement ""being a man is an unmerciful and punishing burden"."I have always dislike being a man"."Even the expression "Be a man!"strikes me as insulting and abusive." Based on life experience and my observation, the way human being are, if you are a man, you have to act lake a man.You have to response like a man. You have to wear a certain cloth.If we want to focus on the difference between men and woman, we can pay attention on gender observation; feeling, clothing, driving, asking direction, points of agreement and disagreements.
In a way i agree with this because men have many expectations from society for example their are certain jobs people say are not "Mainly" enough, and then men are scared to pursue that career. Like the author said about himself as a writer, that people say being a writer is to "feminine." In the other hand i disagree with the statement, because women dont have it easy either.
well if i was living back in the days he wrote i'm sure i would agree with his statement because the time he is referring about the issues happening in his life and in his surrounding it was very awful to be a man following the manners input by society; being told of the clothes and sports you must play, i mean that's unmerciful.But now,society is more mind opened,thus men are more liberal and free to do things they like,like sports and even their clothing have changed, therefore my final answer is no, i don't i gree with his statement.

I don't agree with this statement because every male views manhood in many different ways. They're men that believe to dress or speak in a different manner than everyone else is not manly enough. If a man doesn't like sports than he is not a man. I disagree with it completely, sports don't define a man and acting tough doesn't actually make you tough. If a man reads a lot it's not manly enough. Everyone puts so many rules of how men are suppose to be but every male should be whoever or do whatever they feel is part of their personality. No one in the world should say other wise.

They do whatever they want to do. If someone doesn’t like a society, they don’t have to follow their rules to stay there, they can move to a different society. Men have the right to choose to do what is best for them. So we don’t follow the dress code. we can make our own dress code.

He turns into a sophmoric comptetion on who'se got it worst. He raises vignettes from his life but they seem ineffectual and petty. He raises solid points but then again every one of them is arguable. He's just trying to stir the pot, so to speak. which isn't at all distasteful. He has a brazen voice.

Men can do whatever they want in our society and that's their decision of what to do in life. For him to be write he thinks he is women which i thought while i was reading but women and men can do whatever they want.

I mean there are some males who also disagree with this statement and women would also disagree with this statement. Men would disagree because they believe its not a burden and that being a man has alot privileges. On the other hand, women might believe what men believe. I think that being a man isn't a burden because there are alot of privileges. For example, in Judith Lorber's reading the incident she experiences in the subway with the baby and the father. In that scene the man was acknowledged more than a women and everyone was pleased by him.
