Great PBS's Secrets of the Dead episode on women athletes and steroid use

The episode's title is "Doping for Gold" and here is its summary:
"In the 1970s, female East German athletes came from nowhere to dominate international sport. But behind their success lay a horrifying secret. Doping for Gold reveals the truth behind the biggest state-sponsored doping program the world has ever known, creating a timely perspective on today’s many sports drug scandals."
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/episodes/doping-for-gold-2/42/

What I found very interesting is that two of the athletes' bodies, aside from sustaining numerous injuries, which were often ignored or not fully treated, developed such strong masculine characteristics that they have been ostracized by society, taunted as transvestites, transsexuals and homosexuals. The women themselves admit to having a difficult time coming to terms with their sexuality and gender identity, and one of them currently lives as a man and is in a relationship with another ex-athlete who in turn has been and continues to battle eating disorders.

Please read the all the peer review comments for your photo analysis

I've checked all your blogs, and while I reviewed all of your papers, majority of you, aside from receiving feedback from one of your classmates, also received comments from a Media Lives student. Please read these comments and use them as guides when revising your first draft into a final draft.

In-class Group work as draft for Blog Post #4

With your group, as assigned, focus on one of the following sections of Marable's "The Black Male: Searching Beyond Stereotypes": Black men and history, white men and white women; Black men and women, both Black and white; Black men and themselves, as well as Black women. First discuss your responses to the questions which were posted before today's class. Next, using these responses and focusing on the assigned section, as a group, compose a paragraph (topic sentence, examples from the reading which follow the MLA format). Everyone in the group must write down the paragraph. You may use this paragraph as your Blog Post #4. Lastly, compose a Work Cited entry for Marable's reading to include with your paragraph.
*For your Blog Post#4 entry, if you choose not to use the paragraph you collaborated on in class, compose a response to one point Marable makes in "The Black Male: Searching Beyond Stereotypes."

Additional Pair for Peer Review

Deshawn Coy [ http://shawnbiggs.blogspot.com/; Shawn Biggs; deshawncoy@gmail.com] link on his blog and Jonanthan Gomes [ http://theuniversalmen.blogspot.com/; masculinity of men; Archibaldo.gomes@hotmail.com] link on his blog

Problem with pasting the link to peer review?

Few students brought to my attention that pasting a link in the comment box does not work. I revised the directions on how to communicate the link to the peer reviewed version of the paper to the person whose paper you peer reviewed. The directions are included here in red, and I also corrected them in the assignment.

Step #5: Peer Review First Draft of Photo Analysis Paper
-Before Wednesday, March 30 class, you and your assigned peer reviewer must complete a peer review of each other’s papers. In order to do so, you’ll access your peer reviewer’s paper by clicking on the link to the peer reviewer’s first draft, which he/she will post on his/her blog by 11:59 a.m. on Friday, March 25.
-Clicking the link will take you to peer reviewer’s paper in Google Docs. Click on File, and then in the drop down menu, click on Make a Copy. A box will pop up asking if you want to make a new copy of the document, click OK. Now in the copy of your peer reviewer’s draft, you will make comments by clicking on Insert, and then on Comment in the drop down menu. When you finish, click on File, and then on Rename in the drop down menu. Rename the document Peer Reviewer’s Comments On Photo Analysis Paper, and then click OK. Then click on Share, in the top right hand corner. Then click on Sharing Settings. In the box that opens, under Permissions, next to Private, click on Change. Then select Anyone with a link, and lastly click Save. Next a box will open with the link, and on the bottom there will be a space to enter the e-mail of the person with whom you want to share the link. Copy and paste the link of the person whose paper your peer reviewed. Below that an option is checked which says an e-mail with the link will be sent to the person whose e-mail you entered. You may also click on the option to Send a copy to yourself.
-As you read and peer review your classmate’s paper, comment on the following:
A.) Is the introduction clear and appropriate for the assignment? Is it engaging? Does it have a thesis?
B.) For each body paragraph, comment on whether or not the writer focuses on ONE aspect of the photo. Also, provide feedback regarding how effective is the analysis of each aspect.
C.) Is the conclusion, which should not introduce any new observations about the photo nor a repeat what was stated in the introduction, satisfying?
D.) What is the paper’s biggest strength?
E.) In your professional opinion, what do you think the writer should improve/add/change in the final draft?
*I’ll also read everyone’s first draft and provide feedback/comments.

If you are having trouble with Google Docs

If your link for your First Draft is not working and/or I contacted you about it, go back to the post in which you posted the link. To do this: click on New Post, then click on Edit Posts, click on Edit next to the post in which you included the link. The post window will open. Highlight the link you posted and then click Link, which is in the bar with spellcheck, bold, italics, etc. This will change the link that you posted into blue, underlined text, or a working link.

*If this does not work, simply post your first draft as a blog post on your blog.

Some of the links to your first drafts are not working and others are set to private?

Hello Everyone,
Please reread the directions for setting the Share settings for your first drafts in Google Docs. I wrote out the directions in the assignment, which you can read by clicking on Course Documents, and then clicking on the link for Paper #1 Photo Analysis. This is what you must do:
-In order to make your paper available to your classmates and myself, after you finish composing your first draft, click on the Share box, in the top right hand corner. Then click on Sharing Settings. In the box that opens, under Permissions, next to Private, click on Change. Then select Anyone with a link, and click Save. Next, copy and paste the link to your first draft of paper #1 into a post on your blog. This way, when I or your peer reviewer clicks on the link posted on your blog, we will be able to read your work.
If your link is not working, neither I nor a peer reviewer will be able to give you feedback.

Super Duper Blog Posts #3 :)

I'm very pleased and impressed with how Blog Posts #3 turned out. Does everyone prefer that I assign a specific question about the reading to be addressed in the post?

I especially want to commend Butovens, Alysia, Cristhiam, Ying Ying, and Steven for their insightful analyses of Theroux's piece :) !!!

BLOG POSR #3

Being a man involve playing sport, working hard, being the tough guy. So when guys are young their parents tell them to play sport, or join the Boy Scout. So they can be tough  and strong.  Parents do these things because they want their children to be strong, and they can face any kind of obstacles they come across. This are all example of growing up from boy to man. I am disagreeing with him, when he said“just as high-school basketball teaches you how to be a poor loser.” Being in a basketball team or any other sport don’t makes anybody loser, it teach them discipline, how to behave. It makes them to realize that how tough  real life can be, how hard we have to work to achieve something great in our life.
i don't really understand what we have to do for the graphic organizer homework. can you please explain it to me?

How to access Google Docs

To access your Google Docs document from last week, either click on the link you posted on your blog, or on your blog click on New Post , in the top right hand corner click on My Account, in the middle of the page there should be a list of Google products like Gmail, Blogger, YouTube, and Docs, click on Docs. [*If you don't see Docs in the list of products, on the bottom of the page, click on More. A page full of Google products will open, and from it choose Docs.] This will take you to the Google Docs page and your document should be listed in the middle of a page; click on it and you are there. Lastly, you can create a graphic organizer in Microsoft Word, save it, and then upload it to Google Docs. Follow the above steps to access Google Docs; next, on the left hand side, click on Upload. On the page that opens, click on Select files to up load and select the location where you save your Microsoft Word document, click on the document, then click OK, and lastly click on Start Upload. *If you are having trouble with this, simply create a graphic organizer in Microsoft Word, save it on a flash drive (you were asked to purchase one for this class), and then bring the flash drive with you to class.

Please remember that Blog Post #2: Response to Lorber's "Night to His Day" is due today, by 11:59 a.m.
Make sure to compose and post this post on YOUR blog, not the class blog, just like you did with Blog Post #1. By 5:00p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, Nataly C. and Steven P. will post one question each on the class blog.  The rest of the class must answer one of the questions, either Nataly's or Steven's, by posting a comment below the question on the class blog, before Wednesday's class (i.e. before 8:00a.m.)

Lastly, make sure to bring in The Little Penguin Handbook with you to class on Wednesday, and bring it to class everyday from that day forward.

Have a great weekend. Please post on the class blog or e-mail me if you have any questions.

Why do people have to segregate men and woman?

*Again sorry for the late post. My neighborhood was having issues with the internet connection. Thanks

some questions about Lorber's piece and connection to Fausto-Sterling

Since there is no handbook or Doing-Gener For Dummies, how do we know what is the correct way to do gender? In addition, who/what has the authority to pronounce our gender enactment as incorrect or flawed?

How different is a sex-change operation that a transsexual undergoes, from the examples Fausto-Sterling includes in "How to Build a Man"?

What is at stake if we do not participate in maintaining "the social institution of gender"(Lorber 22)?

What are some ambiguities of Sandra Bem's experiment which involves "hiding the child's anatomy from all eyes except the parents' and treating the child as neither girl nor boy"(Lorber 24)? How does this experiment compare to those of Dr.Money who 'corrects' newborns genitalia?

What are some advantages of gender bending?

What are some possible ways of "resistance and rebellion" against gender norms (Lorber 32)? What are the consequences of such actions?
