Question about Grazian's reading
According to the article " The Girl Hunt: Urban Nightlife and the Performance of Masculinity as Collective Activity", how do young heterosexual collage male students accomplish the power and performance of nightlife rituals to establish masculine identity by girl hunting?

In order to accomplish the power and performance of nightlife rituals, Young heterosexual collage male students chose to go to dance clubs, nightclub, or bars with friends in the city at night. Before they went to these places, they prepared to build up their confidence. For example, it says that “Young men boost each other’s confidence in their abilities of sexual persuasion by watching films about male heterosexual exploits in urban nightlife…”(Grazian 327 ).
ReplyDeleteMen prep themselves out before hitting a club or bar. They have a 'wing-man' to help them boost confidence. Some drink before they go out, as they say, pregame. Both which helps their confidence level when they're talking to girls. At a bar or club, men tend to want to show off and out drink other people and dance to establish their power and performance. With confidence and alcohol in your system, people are more outgoing and less nervous or shy when talking.
ReplyDeleteyoung heterosexual men most of the time try to get as much girl as they can, especially when they go out with a group of friend because they want to show them that they are men enough to get as much girl as they want and whatever girl they like
ReplyDeleteCollege male students first prep themselves before going out through a series of rituals in order to boost their confidence before actually girl hunting. One of those rituals is referred to as "pre-gaming" where the males will drink before going to a party which gets to them loosen up, the students may also listen to rap music and engage in being together ex: crowding around in a circle with arms embraced in each other.
ReplyDeleteHeterosexual male college students establish masculine identity through girl hunting because it is shared knowledge to them. It is like part of their culture. It is implied that when they go out to clubs, parties, or any type of social gathering it is to get with girls. They believe they establish power through competitiveness and having "an endless abundance and variety of anonymous yet willing female sex partners"(325). It is basically encouraged by his peers and or the males that act the same way. They prepare themselves before during and after. They back each other up. So even when going girl hunting if your boy finds a girl and she has a friend you have to be the wing-man.It is looked as normal "masculine behavior" to them.
ReplyDeleteCollege male students get their game of picking up chicks by pre-gaming or getting drunk before actually getting to the club to lower their inhibitions. Men believe they are cooler and hotter when they have some alcohol in their system. College students will generally go out in groups to support each other's game and give each other tips and pointers on how to score with the ladies. Also, 2 buddies will generally act as each other's wingman to ensure that at least one will get lucky. A wingman plays as the decoy for his boy to chat up a girl and ultimately hook up with her while the wingman keeps the chick's girlfriend entertained.

ReplyDeleteheterosexual men in college seek girls at parties, clubs and events to satisfy there own need. I don't think it's rocket science. I see a girl looking good, single for the night, I'm trying to bring her home simple as that.
ReplyDeleteThey do so by acting in group. And that's the key word in that idea. None of the rituals used to girl hunting in order to achieve masculinity can be performed alone, so in Grazian's article we once again that masculinity can only be validated by men peers. Those ritual involve, drinking, having a wing man, watching movies about man sexual exploits. But as Grazian points out that pressure and rituals can have the opposite effect. Instead of constructing masculinity it "destroys" it. According to Grazian:

college males het their power of picking up girls from their friends, I think. Their friends boost their confidence. Some guys just have that confidence and doesn't need a boost, if they like a girl they go talk to her.
