In a society that is (supposedly) doing everything to break free of stereotypes, how can you explain that "glass escalator effect" and social pressure undergone by men working in the "female" professions?
Men in female-dominated professions such as nursing, elementary school teaching, librarianship and social work, experience a "glass escalator" effect. Because they able to advance further and faster, due to the quickly promotion, into the top positions. It is happens due to the traditional gender roles and stereotypes; that men are expected to be in the chief roles.
Males are encouraged to move up position when they are in a female-dominated job. Sometimes they are even judged or made fun off for having these women-dominating jobs. men sometimes don't even try pursuing some jobs because they are seen as women jobs. Men have it more fair though because they get accepted easier in women dominating jobs. Some people like to hire men in women jobs because they think men get the job done well or they just think its nice having a men in a women job and its different. women in the other hand do not have it as fair when working in men-dominating jobs because people sometimes underestimate their skills.
The glass scalator effect in our society is self explanatory. Men will do better in feminine jobs due to the fact that is not as competitive as manly jobs. Females in order to challenge other females will promote males in the job trying to make other famale jelous or competitive. This sort of self-discrimination (because a man doesn't do it to other "same" man) plays a big role of how we define power of the white man over everything else.
i feel like men don't get judged so harshly due to their choice profession because they're expected to do well. Due to such expectations they usually get hired into higher paying jobs and seem to rise above females.
The "glass escalator effect" works as a helping factor in mens' careers. They get promoted to higher or more masculine considered positions or jobs. This is mostly due to the problems that they face in female oriented professions which they choose. One of the reasons for both the pressure and the promotion is the stereotypes: that the men are better or deserve administrative or commanding position in the society and shouldn't do feminine jobs or work.
I think it depends on the position that the man has. We have different expectations of men in different positions. The glass escalator effect helps men get advantages in female job over women. In some” female" professions, males still have advantage in hiring and promotions. For example, it mentions in the article that one of the interviews says that it’s nice to have male in pediatrics. But for social pressure, people think men shouldn’t do female’s job. For choosing nurses in obstetrics and gynecology, they refuse to hire men.
Men it seems will always be judged one way or another whether it be going to "female" jobs or moving up in "female" jobs. To be fair it seems you have to be unfair to everyone no matter what.
Men always seem to have the upper hand no matter what. Socially people can believe stereotypes that they are gay or that they are unable to get a better job. Men who work with children can also be thought as pedophiles. They may be discouraged or it may look unfair but it is not. It is not because everyone faces discrimination. And, yes they may be harshly discriminated by some people but men experience the "glass escalator effect" which pushes them upwards in the professions.
i think that it is strange to see a man doing a woman job, though is harder to see a woman doing a man's job.Although it is easier to find some men having a profession more likely for women because women's professions have always been seem much easier than men's therefore are think to be capable for any gender to do it.
Men are privileged and are expected to have the highest positions in the working world. That is why they are invisibly pushed by society to advance in female oriented professions. Men who are nurses or social workers are expected to be administrators and supervisors because it is believed that men are more capable for these jobs. It may not be true but it is a widely held conception.
Men have an advantage of being promoted quicker than women. Men are used to be seen as the leader, so this is why men have higher positions. This is why when a man is in a female oriented profession they advance more because there will be no other man to compete with.
Well men is always been the leader, but they have higher positions then women. As like back then male was against bye women because they had women professions and they thought that it was not meant for them. Well i believe that male should these female professions no matter what.
men advance quicker in female jobs because they are more rare and maybe leaned on more and given hard work. This could be a reason why men are pushed up so quick through the ranks.
This concept can be explained by the natural advantages men have over women. We follow the preception in our world men are suppose to be the stronger sex and being able to handle difficult tasks and maintain a higher position efficiently compared to a woman.
Men are given more oppourunities than women when it comes to jobs. Men are always given higher positions than women, women seem to stay at their place and are statisfied, while the men are complaining and always want to reach to the top. In society men are seen as masculine and they have more power, while women are seen lower than them.
This is a man’s world; everywhere we go we see men have the upper hand. Even in the job field they are the one get promoted. When men work in "female" profession it seems like they steel treated better then the females. When it comes to hiring sometimes men gets hire before women. like Williams mention on his article “The Glass Escalator: Hidden Advantages for Men in the “Female” that " A Texas librarian at a junior high school district " would hire a male over a female."" (213).
