Quick Write: Choose one of the three quotes from Susan Bordo’s “beauty (re)discovers the make body,” interpret it and show how it applies to advertisement you are analyzing. Be sure to export this post to your own blog as well as the comment you made.
1.) “men are not suppose to enjoy being surveyed period. It’s feminine to be on display. Men are thus taught…to be a moving target. Get out of range of those eyes, don’t let them catch you—even as the object of their fantasies (or, as Sartre would put it, don’t let them “possess,” “steal” your freedom)” (Bordo 173).
2.) “Male grooming products too are often marketed by way of “action hero” euphemisms which obscure their relation to feminine versions of the same product (a male girdle marketed by BodySlimmers is called the Double Agent Boxer) and the fact that their function is to enhance a man’s appearance: hair spray as “hair control,” exfoliating liquid as “scruffing lotion,” astringents as “scrubs,” moisturizers and fragrances as “after” or ‘pre’ accompaniments to that most manly of rituals, the shave”(Bordo 196).
3.) “As embodied in attractive and sometimes highly manipulative images, “men act and women appear” functions as a visual instruction. Women are supposed to care very much about fashion, “vanity,” looking good, and may be seen as unfeminine, man-hating, or lesbian if they don’t. The reverse goes for men. The man who cares about his looks the way a woman does, self-esteem on the line, ready to be shattered at the slightest insult or weight gain, is unmanly, sexually suspect” (Bordo 200).
I'm choosing the 2nd quote.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think this quote is saying is that. Companies advertising a product with a man in it is completely different as if a woman is advertising the same product. Like if it's not the same. I do not agree with this because in relation to my ad. My ad shows a female and male. The brand is Beckham signature "Story". The prodct is a His and Her fragrance. This ad basically shows a female deeply taking in the man scent in some type of sexual way to spike the mood. While the man is looking deeply into her eyes sucking up the fact she smells great also spikes up the mood. Showing this ad "his and her fragrance" proves that the product will not only show that the smell is great, the fragrance are both for men and women.

ReplyDelete2) My advertisement agrees entirely with what Bordo is saying in this quote, the man product being advertised is perfume, yet for men, the name change suggest that it's less feminine, cologne. The perfume for men which most people barely associate to the same degree. To further prove this, the advertisement shows a *Superior* man using the perfume, in the same fashion that most female perfumes show a *Superior* female using the perfume. How can a name change make something so different? Because most people don't wanna admit the similarities because it'll hurt their masculinity.
ReplyDeleteRockawear's 10 year anniversary Diamond collection add is ment to appeal to male readers of King Magazine. The hidden message in this add is seduction towards metro sexuality. The add gives men the idea that buying expensive sunglasses, jeans, and sneakers will make you look more like a real man. This add goes along with Bordo's second quote where she talks about male products that enhances male appearances. I agree with Bordo when she claims products are now marketed with an obscure relation to feminine versions of the same product.I believe men and women have the same common interest in what there appearance is especially when they are influence by the media and adds on what we are suppose to look like.
ReplyDeleteSusan Bordo talks about the beauty of males body in a story about different mens body parts and how it used in different ways. One of those ways is male models posing in ad commercials and mazagine. The quote that caught my attention is the 2nd one where Susan talks about how male action heros are being marketed and used to pose for products that are used to target different people of both gender. What she is trying to say is that males have been posing products that should be something that only females should be the one posing for products. This relates to my ad about the celebrity matthew mcconaughey posing and taking a photoshoot in his tuxedo to reveal and new male colon for males. This relates to susan quote about male body because normally girls would be posing sexually hot for a photoshoot to reveal a new perfume for the same company. But, the ad isn't a girl, its a male movie star who is used to target males attention and some female attraction. According, to Susan it should be a female movie star who should be posing for a product to attention the attention of females and attraction of males. It just strange to have a male star posing for a product rather than a female in Susan Bordo eyes.

I agree with Bordo statments from the quote above that yes in ads that are even selling similar products and by the same brand , there are differences if its for men or for women. Take for example my chosen ad from girogio armani and a female ad from teh same brand both selling perfume. In the womens ad there is the presence of a calm ocean and floral accents arounds the photo. Where is my a depicting the male model there is the photo of the raging ocean and he has a simple black and white background behind him.
I also agree with Bordo that yes for the mens ad his smooth shaven apperance can reflect the ideaology that the perfume for men is to enchance him after the ritual of shaving. I cant say I can make that same type of connection with the womens ad but maybe thats because i am a man.
Something I also come to notice about this and other male perfume ads that they are remarkable simple compared to female ads. Liek in this one for the most part the majority of the ad concerning the model is black and white and thats hwo it appears in the maagzine. The part with the ocean is displayed on the next page which in itself is a little different. Supplying color , a different visual effect, and having a scent sample. For the womens ad there is color throughout the whole things and her image is apart of the water ocean background.
* look on my blog to see my response but with the images i discuss in my response.

In response to Bordo's reading "As embodied in attractive. . . " i disagree with this. Yes women are suppose to care about their appearance but it isn't unmanly if a man cares about his as well. I think its unfair to refer to a female who doesnt care about fashion as unfeminine or lesbian, or referring to a male who cares about their looks as unmanly. Depending on the matter everyone goes about things differently.
ReplyDeleteIn my ad there's a male model representing Lucky Brand clothing. His hair, facial hair, weight and skin all appear attractive, while his face has the expression of confidence. Basically showing all men that it's not unmanly, as Bordo would say, and every guy deserves to look good.

ReplyDeleteIn the reading Susan Bordo states that men are suppose to be moving targets, to never be caught in the act, even if its fantasy. My advertisment is Armaniexchange clothing ad, with 2 models one male & one female, But neither look out at you both gazes are indirect. The male has his shirt ripped open by the female he's looking down at his chest while she looks down at him. They are caught in a "sexual" act and as Bordo stated the men should not be enjoying the attention that they look away and doesnt give you the satisfaction of being caught in the act.

ReplyDeleteit is very true man are not mostly required to do much in modleing other than looking good and have a strong look about themselfs as if they are doing something being the fact that females are use as sex icons or good looking and the way it relates with my image is that it's so true in my picture the guy is sitting down playing a good game of poker and the female's in the picture are just looking nice or are being used in a kind of subliminal message to project to the guys that if they have money they can have any girl they want because they'll be able to buy them off with gifts and all of this can happen to them if they book a stay at CAESARS casino.
What Susan Bordo's quote(#2) means is that a man has his pride, his manhood so high and strong, products just have to be renamed to differentiate those of women. I disagree with the quote because man and women products generally the same just different names and labels. My advertisment shows a man jogging wearing sneakers that look unisex. This being a man and woman can both wear it. A man could purchase grooming products but if really looked down deep its all realatively the same just buying that of a woman.
ReplyDeleteTo me what Bordo said for number 3 is Both women and men try to express themselfs in a attracting and manipulative way. It's all an act. Women who dont really care much about their fashion and looking good usually are the ones who people think are lesbians and unfeminine. Yet for a man to be worrying about his looks and self esteem is taken to be very unmanly or sexually confused. I agree with Bordo about women being called lesbian or unfeminine for not "acting like ladys " Also on how man who care about themselfs to much can be consider homosexual, metrosexual etc..Personally I believe tradition and cultures have a big role in what people think is feminine or masculine.
ReplyDeleteI believe quote three by Bordo is true. Bordo is trying to say that women are expected to care about what others think about them and take pride in there appearance. When a woman doesnt embody "vanity" she's breaking societies rules. If a man was to be careless with his appearance it wouldn't be out of the norm. Men are expected to be grunge and not so high maintence. In fact, when men start to care about how they physically look their peers start to question just how manly the person really is. Men have a free ticket to slack off on their looks and not get prosecuted for it, a luxury women do not hold.
ReplyDeleteIn my GAP ad the man is seen with work boots, dirty jeans and facial hair. The man is effortlessly standind, he could careless about how he is being procived. A woman would have to stand around in high-heels, make-up, and nicely clothed to be selling the same object.

ReplyDeleteMy advertisement was for a new male fragment a from GQ magazine. I've relized that this advertisment mostly likely relates to bordo's statement. My advertisment shows a close up of a mans face. Its a black and white photo, a man with well kept hair and hes leaning his head on his hand. It shows a more softer side to a guy maybe feminine. I guess it proves that if you were this fragrance, your have that attraction. That Male grooming products too are often marketed by similar to feminine advertisment same of hair spray as hair control, lotion and fragrances.
ReplyDeleteResponse to quote #3:
ReplyDeleteWhat Bordo means to say is that men are mostly photographed doing something that does not pertain to modeling. In ads, men apear to be in motion. If they do not they are labeled as feminin. Same goes for women that appear to be doing an action in a picture. They are said to appear unfeminine. In the ad that I have chosen to analyze, Bordo's statement appears to be true. The male is walking out of the water appearing to be some sort of heroor secret agent who jusrt escaped near death by jumping of a cliff, and seems as if he feels un touchable. This automatically shows confidence which I believe is the key to masculinity.
One of the three quotes from Susan Bordo’s “beauty (re)discovers the make body,” I interpret is (3). What I interpret in this quote is that men are only suppose to act out in the photo's, look sharp, show how a man is suppose to look, not care about fashion or anything else because if so then they will find him suspicous and is unmanly, sexually suspect”. And a women suppose to care only about the clothe and make up (fashion) because that is what women "supposly" care about when they go out, try to keep up with today's fashion or try and impress some guy's. It applies to my ad because the guy has a build up body to show how a guy has to have a body to be manly and show no sign's of being unmanly, act out how men suppose to act on certain situations.Like in my ad he has no shirt, in shorts, smiling and on the beach and is showing of the body on the beach as if thats what guy's are suppose to do when in the beach.
ReplyDeleteI think there are many things which have created a big defference between the man and the women. For instance, "the men act and the women appear" said Bordo in her article. For this and other reasons, people believe that the women is most delicated and soft and the men is most rude and strong.Although both men and women are focusing in their phisical apparence, the women is definitevily who care very much about fashion, vanity, and wait always looking good, but the man is very different because he create his own image, attitude, style which only go associated with the pleasure and happiness.

ReplyDelete1)Bordo is stating from my point of view that men arent designed to be advertised. Men are moving objects and should'nt be captured to be viewed publically. Also it seems as if bordo is saying that men should not be controled. Men should be free not told what to do. I disagree on bordo qoute " Men are not suppose to enjoy being surveyed peroid". For example my ad advertises a UFC fighter and whey protein. When you think whey protein the first thing that appears to the mind is muscle mass. Now when you think huge muscle you relate to a man not female. On the other hand this ad would'nt be convincing to the eye if a feminine female were being advertised along with the product. Futhermore I feel it is nessary to advise the gender accourding the product being sold.
According to the reading, by Bordo " men are not suppoose to enjoy being surveyed period," it says that it's feminine to want to be on the spot light. To be stand still and have all attention drawn to. Men are supposed to be on the go and on the move. I have mixed feelings aobut that conculsion. In my ad a man is in a stand still position and is looking directly into the camera. He looks like if he's enjoying the moment of getting ready to where he's going to go. He's caught in the act. Also, the fragrance in the ad is meant for him to smell good, therefore i believe that he's attending something to impress someone. Although, he isn't physically moving, his attire sort of gives me an idea that he's heading somewhere.
ReplyDeletewhat i think Susan Bordo is saying in quote number 3 is that men are not in the ad just for the look, they there to act and do there job related on the photoshoot, and for women they'll most likely appear on almost every ad looking all pretty and just smiling, they will show more of an emotion. the ad that i have is advertising a versace fragrance, the women is showing more feeling then the men. shes not wearing anything but he is, they are both holding each other but to me the girl looks more into it.in my point of view the guy just acts and women appears all pretty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the second quote, male products can relate to the feminine version of the product. The male products that are to enhance a man's appearance are all changed from the feminine word its called into a more manly word. There are differnces in the products advertised but both men and women are both attracted to the same products that enhance the same idea, their appearance.
ReplyDeleteThis can relate to the ad NFL advertising "the old spice" products that are body wash, body spray and deodorant. These products would also be advertised in a woman's ad. Aside from there there being a a NFL player in the image the other difference is that the words are more manly so it would focus on advertising the products towards men.
I agree with the quote "men act and women appear", advertisements for men like sporting goods, construction equipment, power tools, or trucks you always see a man doing something never just standing there without a purpose. In the ad that I chose, it’s a picture featuring Payton Manning, the Quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts; worming up in his Reetone Reebok workout shoes. He's on a football field doing leg exercises and you can only see the side of his face. He is so much in to his work out, he can’t even notice the camera guy taking a picture.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Susan Bordo. I feel "men act and women appear" in many cultures. My advertisement is about a fragrance from "LANCOME". In my advertisement, one man and one woman at the party. She is trying to catch the guy by a fragrance. He is interested in the woman because she is wearing a franrance. It turned out just as she wished. I can see "men act and women" from my advertisement.
The third quote from Susan Bordo’s reading is basically saying that men don’t and should not care how they look while woman should be; “men act and women appear”. Women should look good and being check on and men should not care such things. I disagree with this quote that it is alright for both man and woman to care how they look. To care about fashion is not a privilege of female that men can also do the same thing and to attract female.
ReplyDeleteThe ad I chose is a Rolex men’s watch from “the economist”. The point they are selling from product is that men should care how they look and be confident. I believe it is true that what is so wrong if I care how people look at me. I am a guy and I represent myself out to public once I walk out of my house, people recognize and get to know you by the first look they glance on my clothing and my image.
With the 3rd quote chosen,i totally disagree with it because as it is,modern men do care about their looks because staying meticulous accomplishes alot considering first impression. Some things done by men are considered feminine with an example of the use of a hair dryer which is used basically to dry wet hair not specifying that it was meant for women.my ad projects a modern man with a preppy look yet with a profound "rock" look.In this information age,it is somewhat fair for men to stay conscious of their looks and that in no way is feminine or should be considered as such.
