Two interesting articles appeared in New York Magazine on Jan. 30; the first, entitled " They Know What Boys Want," focuses on the exposure, or as the second article "He's Just Not That Into Anyone" suggests, overexposure to Internet porn. The young ladies, mostly junior high and high school freshmen, interviewed by Alex Morris revealed that boys their age are too preoccupied with sex and expect them-the girls- to be as sexual as the cyber women/images/clips disseminated via Internet. While this may seem like just another case of men are from mars and women are from Venus- boys are slightly immature and more preoccupied with sex, while girls are more concerned with feelings and affection- the photographs in which young girls strike seductive poses and which they post on facebook/text to their boy friends suggest that the girls are adapting to what they see on the Internet and believe boys want. If you can't beat them, join them?
This trend seems to extend to an older demographic, as Davy Rothbart in "He's Just Not That Into Anyone" notes that excessive consumption on Internet porn distorts men's perception of reality to the point where they have to fantasize or recall the porn images when they engage in sexual relations with their girlfriends/wives in order to perform. Rothbart cites a University of Kansas study which revealed that 25% of college men fake orgasms. On the other hand, several men Rothbart interviewed and cites in this article, stated that they find it unattractive when they wives/girlfriends act/speak/imitate 'porn stars' in the bedroom.
So it seems that in fact nobody, neither women nor men know, what men want? Might this be yet another piece of evidence illustrating that men and women are not that different?
